The College of Natural and Health Sciences is one of five academic colleges at UNC. The College houses five schools (Biological Sciences, Human Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Nursing, and Sport & Exercise Science), three departments (Chemistry and Biochemistry, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Physics & Astronomy), and two institutes (Mathematics and Science Teaching Institute, University of Northern Colorado Cancer Rehabilitation Institute). The College collaborates with the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences to prepare elementary and secondary educators through undergraduate and graduate degree programs in mathematics, science, and science education. The undergraduate degrees in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics offer emphasis areas in Secondary Teaching that lead to eligibility for initial teacher licensure. The elementary education program requires substantive mathematics and science coursework in the core curriculum and provides students the opportunity to develop additional knowledge and competencies by electing to pursue either a mathematics or science track within the degree. Additionally, UNC offers post-baccalaureate elementary and secondary education programs through UNC Extended Campus. Doctoral programs in Biological Education, Chemical Education, and Educational Mathematics, which reside in disciplinary units, complement the undergraduate and graduate programs by preparing teacher-scholars who perform research in K-16 mathematics and science education and instruct aspiring elementary, secondary, and post-secondary educators.
The Mathematics and Science Teaching Institute, founded in 1987, has a rich history of ground-breaking initiatives that foster equitable and systemic reforms that strengthen mathematics, science and technology education at all levels. The MAST Institute seeks to impact the education of P-20 students through professional development of teachers and college faculty, offer opportunities in higher education for diverse student populations, and create new knowledge on evidenced-based educational practices for the next generation of STEM professionals. The institute provides leadership and coordination for grant proposals and externally funded projects that seek to improve formal and informal mathematics and science education within the university, the state, and the nation.
The Assistant Dean and MAST Institute Director provides vision, leadership and management to advance the University to national prominence in science and mathematics education research and educational programming, enhance K-12 teacher preparation in the sciences, promote equity and diversity in STEM education at all levels, and offer professional development for P-20 educators. The incumbent will facilitate instructional and research collaborations among internal and external stakeholders in support of research, grant-writing, outreach and pre-service teacher preparation; foster program development and curricular innovations in science education; supervise, support and mentor the staff of the MAST Institute; coordinate the graduate program (M.A.) in science education; and, works in partnership with unit leaders in the sciences to manage instructional assignments for science education programs. The latter also requires ongoing collaboration and communications with the School of Teacher Education leaders in providing quality teacher licensure programs for elementary and secondary science and mathematics teacher programs. The Assistant Dean and MAST Institute Director is expected to maintain scholarly activity in science or mathematics education and actively pursue external funding in that domain.
